General Technical Meaning

The miṣdāq is that in which a concept holds true — the instance or referent that verifies the mafhūm, standing in standard opposition to the mafhūm.

In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works

In the Muqaddima's direct diagnostic voice, ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī locates all exegetical divergence in the miṣdāq to which the verbal mafāhīm apply, never in the mafhūm itself; and he holds that the criterion of a name's true application is the miṣdāq's containing the end and purpose (al-ghāya wa-l-gharaḍ), not frozen outward form. This authorial doctrine goes beyond the general logical sense of miṣdāq as verifier-instance.
