Passage 1

English

Let it be known that we have not inherited from the ancients any well-regulated discourse on the 's influences upon the parts of this world. Only piecemeal remarks have reached us from them affirming that the has some influence — such as the soul's providence, the effect of the evil eye and of sorcery, and the effect of resolve. The cause of this was that the way to codifying rulings is the induction of particulars, then the distinguishing of what differs among them and the delimiting of what they share. Now this matter, in this domain, lies beyond the reach of ordinary people, for the reason already given — that their souls are occupied with material things; and even if something manifest chances to occur to them, they are heedless of it and take no notice of it, being turned away toward other things. As for the perfected, though they do apprehend the rulings of the soul's influence and its regulation, they are occupied with what is more splendid and more precious. Moreover, the purpose of codification is to set matters down for teaching and learning, and this lies outside their aim and is of no benefit to others save rarely — and the rare is as though nonexistent.

Passage 2

English

What we can say by way of a universal statement is this: it has been established in that existents are ordered by the ranking of nobility — first the First Real, blessed and exalted, then , then the imaginal [existents], then bodies and bodily things. And the order of influence in each of them issues from what is above it: thus the order obtaining in the world of bodies derives from causes present in the , and so on. It has likewise been established that human move by until they reach the utmost possible ; and at each rank the soul has a certain union with that rank, and so it is in some measure a source of the order that issues from it — this varying according to the differences among souls.

Passage 3

English

It has also been established that the order obtaining in a world has a good part, which terminates in the Angel — he being the existent that originates good — and an evil part, which terminates in Satan — he being the existent that originates evil. By 'good' and 'evil' we mean what is good or evil relative to the true (al-kamāl), namely the return to God, exalted be He — not what is so relative to the absolute order, since relative to it there is no evil. And it has been established that souls, according to what they carry along of one of the two extremes, have their path of wayfaring to God, exalted be He, determined and distinguished, however high they may ascend.

Passage 4

English

These established principles, [proven] there, yield the possibility that human exercise disposal over this order obtaining in the world of bodies, by whatever mode of disposal it may be, among the strange and wondrous effects. Likewise [they exercise it] in the (ʿālam al-mithāl); and that is by the soul's ascendancy over the [dimension] which is the source of that order.

Passage 5

English

This being so, [these effects] divide into kinds: (1) that whose [cause] is known, such as the ascribed to the planets; (2) that which is not known, such as what befalls the practitioners of ; (3) that which is by nature, such as what befalls those with the evil eye; (4) that which comes about by acquisition; (5) that which is by coincidence, like the varieties of good omen and ill omen and providences; (6) and other than that.
