Chapter Nine: On the State of Human Individuals with Respect to Their Degrees
Passage 1
إن الناس بحسب القسمة في هذه العلوم والآراء يرتقون إلى عدد كثير لكن معظم الأقسام خمسة:
People, according to the division in these sciences and views, ascend to a great number [of divisions]; but the main classes are five:
Passage 2
أحدها: الكاملون فيها تامة. ثانيها: المتوسطون في الغالب عليهم ذلك. ثالثها: المستقصون في الكاملون فيها ومن يليهم. رابعها: المتوسطون فيها الغالب عليهم ذلك. خامسها: الناقصون وهم الذين لم يهيّئوا في أحد الطرفين شيئاً معتدّاً به.
The first: those perfect in them [the sciences and views], with complete (saʿāda). The second: the intermediate in , this being predominant in them. The third: those who go to the extreme in (shaqāwa), consummate in it, and those next to them. The fourth: the intermediate in it [wretchedness], this being predominant in them. The fifth: the deficient — those who have prepared nothing considerable at either of the two extremes.

ولنشرع في بيان حال هذه الأقسام الخمسة من حيث ما يستقبلهم من الحال، وما ينتهون إليه في صراط وجودهم في طي ثلاثة فصول.
And let us begin setting forth the state of these five classes with respect to the condition that awaits them, and what they come to on the path of the of their existence — over the course of three chapters.
