Tashakhkhuṣ

تشخصtashakhkhuṣ

Preferred translation
individuation
Technical sense
the particular mode of existence by which an existent is this individual

General Technical Meaning

Tashakhkhuṣ is individuation: that by which a thing is distinguished from others so that nothing else shares in it.

Reader note. This general definition is neutral among philosophical schools. Identifying individuation specifically with a thing's mode of existence is a Ṣadrian account, not part of the general definition.

In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works

Chapter 2 §3 uses individuation in explaining how a general perfection is specified through volitional and posited judgments. Individuation here is not mere linguistic specification.
