Tajarrud is immateriality: the condition of being free from matter and its material concomitants. In the philosophers’ formal delimitation, a mujarrad is neither a substratum for a substance, nor inhering in another substance, nor composed of the two.
Reader note. This entry concerns philosophical immateriality. It does not cover ascetic detachment or assert a particular theory of degrees of immateriality.
In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works
In al-Manāmāt, when the soul touches something from the world of light and immateriality, it renders that contact through a corresponding form in the world of sense. This context-bound use applies tajarrud to an ontological realm and does not describe the mental act of abstraction (tajrīd).
