General Technical Meaning

Immaterial beings are entities free from matter and its material concomitants. One held philosophical classification distinguishes beings immaterial in both essence and operation, such as intellects, from souls that are immaterial in essence but operate through bodies.

Reader note. This entry concerns immaterial beings in the philosophical sense. It does not cover ascetic or Sufi uses of mujarrad.

In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works

In al-Manāmāt, immaterial entities occupy the rank after the First Truth and before imaginal and bodily beings in the stated ontological hierarchy; the text does not reduce them to one subclass.
