In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works
Risālat al-Manāmāt wa-l-Nubuwwāt
temperament — explanation
Nature and temperament play a major role in supplying a corresponding form.
Limits of this account
This clause is quoted without its following illustration; the passage does not explain all dream imagery by bodily temperament.
al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qurʾān
temperament among the causes of dreaming
Al-Mīzān lists deviations of temperament together with heat, cold, illness, fatigue and other bodily conditions among the factors that act upon the imaginative faculty and therefore shape what is dreamt. This gives temperament the same kind of causal role it has in al-Manāmāt’s discussion.
Limits of this account
This passage does not define temperament, and it does not reduce dreams to bodily causes. Its own argument is that such causes show why not every dream should be treated as carrying truth.
