Technical sense
a faculty's attainment of its fitting perfection, and the loss or non-attainment of it

General Technical Meaning

Pleasure and pain are paired psychic qualities: pleasure is apprehension of what is congenial as congenial, and pain apprehension of what is contrary as contrary. Both are classified by the apprehending faculty into sensory, imaginal, estimative, and intellectual forms.

In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works

In al-Manāmāt, ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī explains pleasure as a faculty's attainment of its fitting perfection and pain through loss or nonattainment where attainment is proper. The paired identity preserves this faculty-relative theory.
