General Technical Meaning

Iʿtidāl is an equilibrium opposed to both excess and deficiency. In ethical psychology it is expressed through the mean states of the faculties; in philosophical medicine, iʿtidāl al-mizāj is balance among the four humoral constituents of bodily temperament.

In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works

In al-Manāmāt, ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī treats equilibrium as the ordering of subordinate faculties so that their acts do not damage human perfection by moving toward excess or deficiency.
