the faculty in which what has been apprehended remains present and from which it is recalled
General Technical Meaning
In faculty psychology, the ḥāfiẓa is the retentive or memory faculty: the repository of estimation, preserving its apprehended contents and enabling their later recall.
In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works
Chapter 4 refers to the retentive faculty as that in which what has been apprehended remains present and from which stored knowledge is recalled. Chapter 13 associates strong memory with dreams that do not require interpretation. Chapter 5’s adjectival ‘preserving’ use is not this faculty.
