the receding of awareness of self and of all else in the concentration of witnessing
General Technical Meaning
In mystical terminology, fanāʾ is the passing away of blameworthy attributes or a loss of awareness of the visible and unseen realms through absorption in divine greatness and witnessing the Real.
In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works
Chapter 10 §16 uses fanāʾ in witnessing: awareness of other and self recedes in concentration upon the Real. The wording supports an experiential/epistemic qualification, not physical annihilation.
