Technical sense
human-specifying rational faculty

General Technical Meaning

The rational faculty is that by which a human acquires sciences and arts, distinguishes noble from base actions and traits, deliberates about what should or should not be done, and apprehends what is beneficial, harmful, pleasant, or painful.

In ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s Works

In the reviewed al-Manāmāt psychology, ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī uses al-quwwa al-nuṭqiyya for the rational faculty that specifies the human kind. It can be diverted or subordinated by lower powers, but when they no longer obstruct its perfection through attachment to nature and matter, it governs the other powers. The attested wording is القوة النطقية; the treatise does not use nāṭiqa or nāṭiqiyya.
