Chapter One — Setting Forth the Purpose of This Discipline

من المعلوم أن كل حقيقي له يَخُصّهُ ويكون بوجدانه. وأنه إذا كان ذا تدريجي كان حصول له بعد وجود أمورٍ أُخرى مُقَدَمَة مُتَقَدِّمَة له، سواء كانت من أو من غير ، وتكون كلُّ مُقدمةٍ سبباً لتهيؤ لما هو بعدَ هذا.

English

It is well known that every real (nawʿ) has a (kamāl) proper to it, and that the and (tamām) of the consist in its possessing that perfection. It is also well known that, if it has a gradual , it attains its (ghāya) only after other antecedent preparatory factors have come to exist, whether these be of its own (jins) or of another . Every such preparatory factor is a cause of the ’ readiness and of its (istiʿdād) for what comes after it.

ثم إن الإنسان حيث كان حقيقياً ممتازاً عن سائر قُسَمائه التام. وذلك تدريجي الحصول له، كان سبيله في حصول سبيل سائر أنواع التدريجي . وإن كان أصل وهو حاصلاً له في الجملة، مثل سائر الأنواع، فله من حيث شؤون وعوارض من حيث ترتيب وصفاتها وأحكامها، يعرض له حتى يتم .

English

Now man—since he is a real , distinguished from the other coordinate species by complete (fikrī) (al-idrāk)—and since this complete discursive apprehension is acquired by him gradually, his path to the attainment of his is the path of the other kinds whose is gradual. And although the root of the —namely —is present in him in a general sense, as in the other species, nevertheless in respect of his he has modes and attendant features—in respect of the ordering of the , their qualities, and their determinations—which befall him until the is made complete.

فالغرض من هذا الفن معرفة ما يَعْرِضُ الإنسانَ مِنْ حيث إنه من الترتيب الذي هناك وأحكامه ولواحقه، وأما الغرض من تفاصيل أبحاثه فيغنينا عن ذكره ما مرّ.

English

The purpose of this discipline, then, is to know what befalls the human being insofar as he attains through (ʿilm) and —namely, the ordering found therein, its determinations, and its concomitants. As for the purpose of its detailed investigations, what has already been said spares us stating it.
